2001–02 Work

(Tokyo)

"To feel paint's reality, you need to be in the same space as the paint. If paint is thick, advancing in space toward you, both the real and the imaginative space will be deep. I photographed the thick, red oil paint of my earlier paintings and, on a new canvas, created a digital print. The 'real,' thick oil paint was now flat and 'unreal' as a print. On that surface, I then painted with new red oil paint. Now there were two types of red paint, depicted paint and real paint, creating two different kinds of depth to experience at the same time. But how different were these depths from one another, really? The work was the means of feeling the answer first hand." —Michiko Fujii Fowler
